In the 1870-72 Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales by Marius Wilson, Tharston is thus described:

"THARSTON, a parish, with a village, in Depwade district, Norfolk; 1 mile NE of Forncett r. station, and 9½ S by W of Norwich. Post town, Long Stratton. Acres, 1,582. Real property, £3,568. Pop., 351. Houses, 82. The property is subdivided. T. Hall is the seat of J. Harvey, Esq. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Norwich. Value, £120.* Patron, the Bishop of N. There are a national school and charities £30."

and more recently as:

"The parish of Tharston lies in southern Norfolk about 10 miles south of the City of Norwich and just west of the main A140 road linking Norwich to Ipswich. The village lies on slightly higher ground south of the valley of the River Tas and just north-west of the rapidly growing dormitory village of Long Stratton. Tharston is centred on a three-way "T" junction of lanes with other farms and cottages stretching eastwards to Tharston Hall."
